VIEWPOINT OF THE SOUTHER PATAGONIAN ICE - PASO MARCONI TREK
4 DAYS - 3 NIGTHS

20

This is one of the shortest expeditions that will allow trekkers to “enter” the Southern Patagonian Ice-Field, and spend some time there, on the vast plateau that runs trough the mountains of the Argentine/Chilean border. The trek climbs Marconi Glacier to enter the Ice-Field and the same route is used to exit. Many important Mountains are seen during this amazing trek to name a few… Mt Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, Pier Giorgio, Pollone, Cordon Mariano Moreno, Cordon GAEA, Gorra Blanca, and others.

Day 1 | Piedra del Fraile
From El Chalten, transfer to the Bridge over Electric River, head of road to Piedra del Fraile and start of the Expedition. Day 2 |Marconi Pass
We will wake up early: breakfast, after only 30 minutes of walking will bring us in front of the Marconi Glacier. A gigantic screed moraine is our fi rst obstacle; the terrain here is unstable and moves constantly, impeding the formation of a marked path. After this short but diffi cult stretch, we will climb on the glacier itself entering slowly in a vast area of snow and ice. This day might be the toughest of the expedition. We will climb 2400 ft (800 m) on ice and snow, using crampons, and round crevasses with the assistance of the guide and his team – with the aid of ropes if necessary. Marconi Glacier forms a pass that creates a bottle eff ect with the winds coming from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Pacifi c Ocean. Hence, participants will need to be not only physically, but also mentally prepared to do the trek in rain or snowstorm. At the end of the day, we will arrive at our second campsite, in the South shadow of Mt Marconi and only an hour away from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field itself. The goal is to reach the Chilean Mountain hut at the base of Mt Gorra Blanca. Marconi pass: 1500 above sea level Mountain Hut: 1650 above sea levelWalking distance: 10 Km.
