Previous walking or trekking experience is not required. Reasonable health are necessary to walk and enjoy the outdoors. Any person who normally walks, plays golf, tennis or any other sports can do this type of walking without any problem at all.
The programs normally involve day hikes with lodging in hotels, lodges, estancias  and often rest days between walking days.
 
Short walks between 3 to 8 hours, returning to the lodge in the evening.
Gentle elevation gain or drop (100 to 400 mts)
Lodging in hosterias, hotels, lodges or estancias, very rarely in organised campsites.

 MODERATE

Any person who has been walking in hills or mountains in the past will feel comfortable.  Also those who practice aerobic sports on a regular basis and are reasonably fit. This category includes long waling days and perhaps shorter but more demanding walks, such as a short ice-hike like the Viedma Ice Trek, or several day hikes linked with campsites, there is no technical difficulty but the camping and walking combined day after day make it a bit more demanding.
The trails are generally easy to follow, and well marked.

Long walk from 5 to 10 hours.
Use of porters or pack-horses from general equipment, food, etc..  hikers will have to carry  day packs only.
Moderate to big elevation gain (400 a 600 mts.)
Lodging in Hosterķas /Hotels/lodges or  campsites.
Moderate physical demand.

  • Chalten/Lago de los Tres

  • North Rio Blanco/Camp. Poincenot/Camp.Thorwood

  • El Chalten/ Camp Toro.

  • Base Camp Circuit.

  • Glacier Trekking from Thorwood Camp

  DEMANDING 3

This type of trek requires regular sport or activity, previous walking experience over all types of terrain. For those who feel poor on previous experience, training prior to the trek  is greatly encouraged. Trails can often be hard to follow or even inexistent, the party may have to move over unstable moraines, scree slopes, snow, and bushes.  Normally the treks include one or more high passes where the weather can be very harsh. Good mountain clothing is a must.
A special note on the Torre ice Hike hat we include in this category because even though it is a single day activity, starting and ending in El Chalten it is a very long 12 hour day.

Long walks from 6 to 10 hours
Use of porters or pack horses for the bulk of equipment,, Hikers carry good size day packs.
In some stages of the program it is required to carry heavier rucksacks, with personal items such as clothing sleeping bag, mat, and other personal items.(additional porters may be hired)
Moderate to big elevation gain (400 a 1000 mts.)
Lodging in camps or in mountain huts (twin share accommodation). And hotels at some stage.
Moderate physical demand.
Previous training advised.

Examples Grade C:

  • Torre Ice Trek in one day

  • Base camp circuit with Agachonas Pass and Paso del Viento Pass

  • Ascents to Pliegue Tumbado Loma del Diablo, and Loma de las Pizarras

  • Crossing from Lake San Martin and El Chalten with support Pack-horses.

  DIFFICULT
 

In this level it is common to find areas that require many hours walking outside of marked trails, and across all kinds of terrain. Moraines, bushes,  bogs, scree slopes, Glacier crossing on their ablation areas, Passes, river wading, snow and any other mountainous area.
Hikers will carry backpacks, campsites are very rustic and remote, and the trek can be several days ina row without rest days.

Long walks of 6 to 10 hours.
The clients have to carry their own equipment, and often part of the general equipment. (Personal porters can be arranged).
Moderate to big drops in altitude (400 to 1000 mts).
Lodging in camps or in mountain huts (twin share accommodation.
Physically very demanding.
Previous technical mountaineering experience not required.
Previous experience of trekking and camping is required.
We recommend aerobic training before the trip.

Examples Grade D:

  • Mount HUEMUL Circuit

  • Crossing from Lake San Martin and El Chalten without support Pack-horses.

  • Crossing from Estancia Cristina to Estancia Helsingfors

  VERY DIFFICULT
 

This level includes all of the above mentioned. Also ascents of climbing peaks. The ascents can be short compared to expeditions but the technical difficulty and level of commitment make it this level.  Snow, ice and rock climbing can be required during the ascent.

Also out longer Ice-Field expeditions  are very demanding, require travelling over all kinds of terrain and in very isolated areas. Winter camping is necessary and day after day the party encounters harsh conditions.

Moderate to big drops in altitude (400 to 1000 m).
Lodging in camps or in mountain huts (twin share accommodation).
Physically very demanding.

Previous experience in mountaineering, skiing, or cross-country skiing, winter camping is desired.
We recommend aerobic training before the trip.

  • Ice Field Expeditions

  • Ascents of Cerro Huemul or Cerro Solo.

  • Cerro Huemul Circuit or  Crossing from Lag. San Martin to El Chalten in Winter.
