Organization
conformed by a group of biologists and naturalistic with a deep
interest in the Conservation of the small cetaceans and marine
mammals in general in the southern area of Chile. The activities
of the Society include the design and making of programs of
environmental education, the conduction of educational programs
based on an interactive methodology that integrates the theory
and experience; the logistical support to expeditions and
investigation groups via marine.
In constant form we are developing a program of intense
exploration in areas few described in fauna terms and flora in
the archipelago patagónico, according to which we are generating
a database on which the regulations and behavior codes are built
for an ecological and sustainable tourism in these pristine
costs.
We believe firmly that the field investigators today in day they
should assume an ethical responsibility in only not to share the
information with the widest public, socializing concepts with a
high degree of technical term in a way that is comprehensible
for all public, but also to develop the tools that assure that
this information will be used in a way that promotes the
conservation of the natural and cultural patrimony.

Carlos
III island area, Straits of Magellan
A
rugged uninhabited scenery of towering mountains, glaciers,
fjords, rivers and waterfalls.
The land of old canoeros communities (kaweskar), discovered by Hernando
de Magallanes and explored by Sarmiento de Gamboa, John
Naeborough and Robert Fitz Roy (HMS Beagle expedition)
among others.
Home to significant concentrations of wildlife with colonies of
Southern sea lions and Fur seals, cormorants, magellanic
penguins and skuas.
Carlos III waters are the first known feeding ground for
humpback whales along the Pacific coast of South America.
|
|

|
|

|
|

|
These
gentle giants are famous for their singing abilities.
Their unique hunting skill, called bubblenet feeding,
involves a group of humpbacks working together to capture
schools of herring. Each whale has a particular role in
the process: One whale swims in a circle while blowing
bubbles under a school of herring. When the bubbles rise,
the school ofherring can not escape and form into a tight
ball in the center. Other whales vocalize -grunting or
screaming - to scare the herring to the surface. The
whales then rise with their mouths wide open to captur
elarge amounts of fish. |
