Winter
is a special moment in southern Patagonia. The weather
near El Chaltén and El Calafate is not as harsh as
everyone thinks. It is cold, but the dryness makes it
easier to deal with. Westerly winds almost disappear and
gentle eastern breezes are common during winter. In
addition, all the drama of the famous Patagonian gales
gives place to a much quieter winter atmosphere.
Photographers are rewarded with low sun and winter light:
snow covered trees, frozen lakes, empty landscapes and
beautiful skies, make an excellent blend of subjects to
shoot. Even though days are shorter, visitors can still
enjoy most of the hikes, and as a bonus, the majority of
the trails are deserted, so the whole national park is
waiting for us to discover it. It is important to mention
that we have a fleet of 4x4 vehicles to get to most
places, even during snowstorms. Vehicles and guides have
permanent radio-contact.
Our mountain guides live in the mountains, they are well
trained in winter matters. All the necessary technical
gear to enjoy the snow is available, such as four season
tents, snow-shoes and climbing equipment. Being fond of
this area, we find snow is a gift rather than an obstacle.
