Fuerte Bulnes (Fort Bulnes), Bahía Mansa
(Mansa Bay) and Puerto del Hambre (Famine Port)
Time of duration: 4 hours and 30 minutes.
Daily outings: 10:00 am
.

They are interesting primarily for their historical significance. Puerto del Hambre was an early Spanish settlement along the Strait of Magellan, and Fuerte Bulnes established Chilean authority over the region. To reach these sites, travel south on Route 9.
The circuit heads south of Punta Arenas as far as the Historical site of Fuerte Bulnes ( Fort Bulnes ), 60 kilometers away. Native hardwood forest of lenga, ñirre, and coigüe, as well as the regional calafate bushes, famous for they tasty berries, line the road to the fort. Stay alert for singings of the regional birds: sea gulls; thrushes; ducks; hawks and those known only by their Chilean names such caiquenes ( a type of goose ), bandurrias and other species. Along the way you will also be able to view the Strait of Magallan and see graceful dolphins called " Tonina " in the water. You will pass ranches and fishing coves such as Bahía Mansa (Mild Bay) and Rinconada Bulnes ( Bulnes Corner ). These areas are examples of important economic activities in the region - raising livestock and fishing.
Near Fuerte Bulnes, you will pass a monument marking the geographical center of Chile halfway between Arica and the South Pole. Fuerte Bulnes was Chile´s first outpost in the Magallanes region, established on Oct. 30,1843 during the presidency of Manuel Bulnes. Who decided to place this area under Chilean jurisdiction because of its strategic importance and economic potential. He also wanted to carry out the great desire of Chile´s liberator Bernardo O´Higgins, to claim this.
A stop will also be made at the nearby remains of Ciudad Rey Don Felipe ( City of King Don Felipe ), better known as Puerto del hambre ( Port Famine ). It is a historic area, cultural attractive in which the Sarmiento de Gamboa commander founded City of King Don Felipe on March, 1584 had a tragic ending: its inhabitants died of starvation. Years later The Thomas Cavendishm captain arrived to the area and found the mortal remains of the old colony Which he called "Port Famine", nowadays in Spanish Puerto del Hambre, was the disastrous first Spanish attempt to establish a colony in the area and gain control of the Strait of Magellan.

Penguin Colony in Seno Otway
Time of duration: 4 hrs.
Daily outings: 16:00 pm.

Otway gulf penguin colony is 65 km. from Punta Arenas, at the northeast of the Brunswick peninsula. Between September and April about 6,000 specimens of the Magallanes specie (Spheniscus magellanicus) uses this place to nest. These penguins build a 50 centimeters cave where they place two eggs. These eggs incubation takes 38 to 42 days, after which parents feed the chicks until 80 days of being born. Once the chicken develops appropriated feathers for life in water, the adults stop feeding them and they start the annual molt. Once it finishes, the adults leave the colony and go to the sea in the middle of March and return to the same colony year after year. The young ones return exceptionally to the colony, however they won't reproduce until 4 to 6 years after being born.
