Clear, sunny, windy days
predominate in summer, with higos of 15º C (59º F) and lows
hovering around 5º C ( 41º F). Winter highs average 8º C (46º
F), lows -2º C (28º F), with occasional snowfalls.
Temperatures rise somewhat from west to east, but decrease as
you head south.
Rainfall pattners are marked, the Andes Mountain (and the Darwin
mountains range) acting as a sort of climatic curtain. The
islands lying to the west hold the world record in rainfall (
with over 7.000 mm/ ca, 280 inches per year), while the
northeastern pampas ( steppes) hit at most some 280mm ( 11
inches) annually.
Equipment Needed:
Hiking boots (waterproof and
broken-in), waterproof jacket and pants (eg.: Gore-Tex®),
thermal, synthetic undershirts (eg.: Capilene®), fleece jacket,
wind-stopper gear, hat with ear-covers, thermal gloves and socks,
sunglasses, UV protection (minimum 30 SPF) for face and lips,
mosquito repellent.
Remark: The
secret in Patagonia is to dress in layers, to obtain the maximum
comfort with minimum weight. It is important to use wind
resistant clothing which also dries fast, that is why we
recommend not using cotton. If you are thinking of buying new
shoes, make sure to wear them in beforehand. Bringing a
treatment against blisters (moleskin, second skin, etc.) is a
good idea just incase
